Vashon Golf and Swim Club is a semi-private club offering a unique combination of recreation and social activities for members. Miles Hatch homesteaded on Vashon Island in the 1880s. An entrepreneur, his multiple ventures on Vashon thrived, and by 1892 he owned much of the Burton Peninsula. Hatch named Burton after his hometown of Burton Township in Illinois. He built a sawmill, store and post office and also helped found Vashon College which was located in Burton. Hatch envisioned a dairy industry and began clearing land on Maury Island to create Mileta Ranch which he named after himself, his son Lewis and his daughter Tamar.
The creek ran through the northern part of the property. Hatch built a dock on the east side to ship milk from. That area, the Mileta Creek Preserve, is now owned by the Vashon-Maury Land Trust. The Club sits on the former ranch site.
